Decline or Return Pell Grant Funds

Good News: Managing Your Pell Grant Funds!

Did you know you have choices regarding your Pell Grant funds? We want you to feel empowered! You can decline or return Pell Grant money within the current academic year. This is a super helpful option if you want to preserve your eligibility for future enrollment periods.

    Here's how it works:

    • Declining Undisbursed Funds: If your Pell Grant hasn't been sent out yet, you can easily decline that funding.
    • Declining Part or All: You can decline all or just a portion of your Pell Grant award during the current award year.
    • Current Year Only: Please remember that you can't decline or return a Pell Grant from a past academic year. This option is for your current year's funds.
    • Returning Disbursed Funds: If the funds have already been disbursed to you for the current year, you can return them.

The form for this is in the BFCC Student Portal. Print and download it to decline or return your Pell Grant Funding!

  • Have you been Verified?

Understanding Verification: Nothing to Worry About!

Sometimes, you might see a note on your Student Aid Report (SAR), or your school might reach out, letting you know you've been selected for verification. Don't worry, this is a completely normal process! Verification is simply how your school confirms that the information you've shared on your FAFSA form is accurate and complete. If you're selected, your school will kindly ask for a bit more documentation to support the details you reported.

Please know that this doesn't mean you've done anything wrong! Some students are chosen randomly, and some schools even verify all FAFSA forms as a standard practice. All you need to do is provide the documentation your school requests. Just be sure to do so by their deadline, as this helps ensure you can receive your federal student aid without any hiccups.

    What is dependency status?

Unraveling Your Dependency Status for FAFSA!

Have you ever wondered what makes you a dependent or independent student for financial aid purposes? It all comes down to your answers on the FAFSA form itself! Your dependency status is super important because it determines whose financial information you'll need to report.

    Here's the scoop:

    • If you're considered a dependent student, please share both your own information and your parents' information.
    • If you're an independent student, you'll focus on reporting your details (and, if you're happily married, your spouse's too!).

Knowing your dependency status is key to accurately filling out the FAFSA® form. To make this determination a breeze, we have a helpful worksheet designed just for you! It will gently guide you through the process.

    FERPA Authorization Form

    FERPA: Your Privacy Matters!

Let's discuss something important for your student privacy: the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

FERPA is a federal law protecting educational records. The U.S. Department of Education manages it and applies to colleges that receive federal funding, including us! You know your information is handled with care.

Your Rights as an "Eligible Student"

Once you turn 18 or attend BFCC, you become an "eligible student." This is great news because it means all the rights regarding your education records that your parents previously held are now officially transferred to you! As an eligible student, you have some key rights:

    • Access Your Records: You have the right to see and review your education records.
    • Request Changes: You can ask to amend your records if you believe something isn't accurate.
    • Control Disclosure: You can control who sees your personal information from your records with specific exceptions.
    • File a Complaint: If you ever feel your FERPA rights haven't been honored, you can file a complaint with the Department of Education.

Want to give someone else access to your records? You can do that! Just click here for the FERPA Release form: FERPA Release Form
