Understand Financial Aid

As you prepare for college or career school, explore how financial aid works, learn about the types of aid, and find out if you’re eligible. You can also estimate your eligible aid when you check out the Federal Student Aid Estimator.

You can access your federal student loan, provided you have chosen to take a loan to finance your education.

You can look up your loans by signing in and checking your account.

P.S.

BFCC does not participate in the student loan program at this time.

Nor do we offer the Indian Fee Waiver; the waiver is only accessible through the Montana University System.

The American Indian College Fund provides scholarships to American Indian and Alaska Native college students who are enrolled in certificate, undergraduate, or graduate programs at tribal colleges and universities or nonprofit, accredited schools

FAFSA Pell Grant Eligibility

Unlocking Your Future: Understanding the FAFSA!

Ready for financial aid? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), from the U.S. Department of Education, is your key! It determines your eligibility for federal need-based college financial aid based on your financial situation.

Why Apply Annually?

It's your annual pass to funding.

Your Essential FSA ID!

Create your FSA ID (electronic signature) to sign and submit your FAFSA. Keep it secure – you'll need it for any eligible U.S. college you attend!

Are You Eligible?

  • Financial Need: Show this by completing your annual FAFSA.
  • Citizenship: Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Enrollment: Be enrolled or accepted as a regular student in an eligible degree/certificate program.
  • Academic Progress: Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
  • Loan Status: No defaults on federal student loans.
  • Grant Status: No repayment or overpayment on federal grants.

Essential Forms to Submit:

  • Educational Planner
  • Title IX form
  • Student Intake Form

Staying on Track: Your Educational Planner & Advisor!

To help you smoothly navigate your academic journey and ensure everything's aligned for both Financial Aid and Graduation, remember to use your BFCC Educational Two-Year Planner! It's a fantastic tool to keep you headed in the right direction.

Before you register for classes, please make an appointment with your advisor. They're here to help you confirm you're on the perfect path toward graduation.

Once you've discussed your plan, please complete your Educational Planner form. Be sure to get your advisor's and your signature on it, then bring the original form to the Financial Aid office. This simple step helps us ensure your financial aid is processed smoothly!

Good News: Managing Your Pell Grant Funds!

Did you know you have choices regarding your Pell Grant funds? We want you to feel empowered! You can decline or return Pell Grant money within the current academic year. This is a super helpful option if you want to preserve your eligibility for future enrollment periods.

Here's how it works:

  • Declining Undisbursed Funds: If your Pell Grant hasn't been sent out yet, you can easily decline that funding.
  • Declining Part or All: You can decline all or just a portion of your Pell Grant award during the current award year.
  • Current Year Only: Please remember that you can't decline or return a Pell Grant from a past academic year. This option is for your current year's funds.
  • Returning Disbursed Funds: If the funds have already been disbursed to you for the current year, you can return them.

The form for this is in the BFCC Student Portal. Print and download it to decline or return your Pell Grant Funding!

Have you been Verified?

Understanding Verification: Nothing to Worry About!

Sometimes, you might see a note on your Student Aid Report (SAR), or your school might reach out, letting you know you've been selected for verification. Don't worry, this is a completely normal process! Verification is simply how your school confirms that the information you've shared on your FAFSA form is accurate and complete. If you're selected, your school will kindly ask for a bit more documentation to support the details you reported.

Please know that this doesn't mean you've done anything wrong! Some students are chosen randomly, and some schools even verify all FAFSA forms as a standard practice. All you need to do is provide the documentation your school requests. Just be sure to do so by their deadline, as this helps ensure you can receive your federal student aid without any hiccups.

Dependent or Independent? Let's Find Your Form!

Now, for the next step: Are you a Dependent or Independent student? If you know your status, please choose the correct verification form below.

If you're not quite sure, no problem at all! Please take a moment to visit our "Am I independent or dependent form" [link to form if available] to help you determine which form you'll need to complete. We're here to guide you!

Unraveling Your Dependency Status for FAFSA!

Have you ever wondered what makes you a dependent or independent student for financial aid purposes? It all comes down to your answers on the FAFSA form itself! Your dependency status is super important because it determines whose financial information you'll need to report.

Here's the scoop:

  • If you're considered a dependent student, please share both your own information and your parents' information.
  • If you're an independent student, you'll focus on reporting your details (and, if you're happily married, your spouse's too!).

Knowing your dependency status is key to accurately filling out the FAFSA® form. To make this determination a breeze, we have a helpful worksheet designed just for you! It will gently guide you through the process.

FERPA: Your Privacy Matters!

Let's discuss something important for your student privacy: the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

FERPA is a federal law protecting educational records. The U.S. Department of Education manages it and applies to colleges that receive federal funding, including us! You know your information is handled with care.

Your Rights as an "Eligible Student"

Once you turn 18 or attend BFCC, you become an "eligible student." This is great news because it means all the rights regarding your education records that your parents previously held are now officially transferred to you! As an eligible student, you have some key rights:

  • Access Your Records: You have the right to see and review your education records.
  • Request Changes: You can ask to amend your records if you believe something isn't accurate.
  • Control Disclosure: You can control who sees your personal information from your records with specific exceptions.
  • File a Complaint: If you ever feel your FERPA rights haven't been honored, you can file a complaint with the Department of Education.

Want to give someone else access to your records? You can do that! Just click here for the FERPA Release form: FERPA Release Form
