Description

This course examines the historical development of Montana from the territorial period through statehood and into the modern era. Emphasis is placed on the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that have shaped the state, including Indigenous histories, Euro-American settlement, resource extraction, agricultural development, and the growth of communities and institutions. Students will analyze key events, figures, and movements within Montana history while situating the state within broader regional and national contexts. The course also explores the evolving relationships between land, identity, and governance, as well as the continuing impact of historical processes on contemporary Montana.
